A cornerstone of A Special Place is our community-based housing program where participants are supervised 24/7 by trained and supportive peer support specialist staff. Collaboration with community partners ensures referrals for housing and wraparound services to address the comprehensive needs of this population.
The recipe for success of A Special Place participants includes high-intensity nursing-driven case management to proactively address care of our participants in a "whole person" approach. Nursing staff and case managers work to refer to community partners, address medication compliance, and prevent adverse outcomes. An emphasis is placed on transportation, food, clothing, and disease prevention.
Our participants receive in-person, on-site, and/or in-office evidence-based psychiatric services and psychotherapy by board-certified staff. An emphasis on use of long-acting injectable (LAI) antipsychotics is encouraged when appropriate. Participants are engaged in individual and group psychotherapy with an emphasis on life skills, medication compliance, and self-advocacy.
Our participants will continue to be engaged with the judicial process with Outpatient Restoration Education implemented onsite. Further collaboration with Competency Enhancement Programs is promoted with a goal of expeditiously reaching competent to proceed (CTP) to trial.
The ultimate goal of A Special Place is to collaborate with the judicial system on early identification of individuals with serious mental illness facing criminal charges to implement treatment for mental health diagnoses instead of incarceration ultimately leading to reduced burden on taxpayers, law enforcement, and courts with an improved quality of life of our participants.
